SURGING PRIDE BEAT SACRED HEART

9/19/2008 5:15:00 PM

Senior forwards Brit Blankmeyer (Convent Station, NJ) and Charlia Warner (Bridgetown, Barbados) each scored a goal off penalty corners to help the Pride post a 2-0 victory over Sacred Heart in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.

Goalkeepers Krisha Giammarco (Stewartsville, NJ) and Amanda Heyde (Yorktown Heights, NY) logged the tandem's second combined shutout of the season as the Pride improved to 5-1. Whitney Mills posted nine saves for the Pioneers, which dropped to 1-5.

Hofstra extended its winning streak to three, outscoring opponents 12-4 during that span. After shutting out Fairfield on Sunday, Pride netminders have not surrendered a goal in the past 151:42.

"The difference right now is that our team is so balanced defensive-wise," Hofstra Head Coach Kathy De Angelis said. "We can also attack anywhere on the field. It's really helping us develop."

Blankmeyer opened the scoring 15:51 into the contest, capitalizing on Nancy Wagenbrenner's (Berlin, Germany) feed for her fourth goal of the season. Wagenbrenner faked a shot on a penalty corner and then slid a pass to Blankmeyer for the goal. Warner added the insurance marker early in the second half. Kristin Thompson (Santa Cruz, Trinidad) initiated the penalty corner, sending a pass that Reyna Farnum (Bridgetown, Barbados) set up for Warner's shot. The goal gave Warner a team-high seven on the year.

Giammarco (3-1) started and made two saves to earn the victory, playing the first 52:52 before giving way for Heyde. Heyde, who won the CAA's Co-Rookie of the Week Award after winning her first two starts over the weekend, turned aside the only shot she faced in 17:08 to preserve the shutout.

The Pride held an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners, leading to its two goals. Overall, Hofstra out-shot the Pioneers, 24-4, to improve to 4-0 at home this season.

"It's exciting to be undefeated at home," De Angelis said. "We're getting stronger and stronger."

Hofstra will next be in action on Wednesday when it travels to Quinnipiac. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
