Hofstra defender/midfielder Steven Ehrichs (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood - pictured) earned his first international cap when he started and played all 90 minutes for the Puerto Rico national team in its World Cup qualifying match against Honduras on Wednesday.
Ehrichs, who is entering his sophomore year at Hofstra this fall, started at right back for Puerto Rico, which dropped a 4-0 decision to the heavily favored Honduras squad in the second stage of CONCACAF qualifying. Honduras scored one first half goal, then struck quickly for back-to-back goals in the 51st and 52nd minutes, before capping off the win with a goal in the final minute of regulation.
Ehrichs played in 12 games for Hofstra as a freshman last year, seeing action as both a defender and a midfielder, while missing several games due to injury. He scored his first collegiate goal in a 3-0 win over George Mason on November 4.
Prior to coming to Hofstra, Ehrichs started for two years at Brentwood High School, which he helped to two Long Island championships and a combined 37-3-5 record in his two seasons. He led the Indians to the New York State semifinals as a junior and then to the finals as a senior, earning a pair of all-league honors.
Ehrichs and Hofstra defender Richard Martinez (Highland, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) are both expected to be in action for Puerto Rico in the second leg of the World Cup qualifying round against Honduras on June 14 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Martinez missed the first game against Honduras after playing in Puerto Rico's 1-0 win over the Dominican Republic in the first stage of qualifying back in March.
Hofstra also has two other current players and one incoming freshman participating in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, as forward Demont Mitchell (Delray Beach, FL/IMG Academy) is a member of the Bahamas national team and scored a goal in the first stage of qualifying in a 2-2 tie with the British Virgin Islands. The Bahamas faces Jamaica in the second stage of qualifying on June 14 and June 18. Sophomore Paul Alexander (Bridgetown, Barbados/O-Level Institute) is a member of the Barbados national team, which faces the United States on June 15 and 22. Incoming freshman Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados/Harrison College) is also in the Barbados national team pool.
