Hofstra University senior midfielders Kevin and Michael Unterstein were both selected in Wednesday's 2008 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. Kevin Unterstein was selected with the 10th pick of the second round -the 20th selection overall- by the New Jersey Pride while Michael was selected with the fifth pick of the fourth round -the 35th selection overall- by the Long Island Lizards.
Kevin, the 2008 CAA Defensive Player of the Year and the 2008 CAA Championship Tournament Most Outstanding Player, played in all 16 games as a senior for the conference champions. He led the team with 70 ground balls and ranked second in the CAA and 28th in Division I. The 2007 USILA All-American honorable mention also picked up two assists as a senior. During his four-year career Kevin played in 65 games and tallied 245 ground balls, four goals and four assists. He joins Hofstra assistant coach Matt Rewkowski and Pride alums Tom Kessler, Tim Treubig and older brother Chris Unterstein on the New Jersey Pride roster,
Michael, a two-time All-CAA second team selection, also played in all 16 games in 2008 and tallied 20 goals and 13 assists to rank third on the Pride roster in points. He also picked up 35 ground balls and had two game-winning goals. Voted the 2005 CAA Rookie of the Year Michael also played in 65 games during his four-year Hofstra career and recorded 44 goals, 55 assists and 83 ground balls. He was named the 2008 co-recipient of the Hofstra Athletics Nick Colleluori Unsung Hero Award. Michael joins Hofstra alumni Nicky Polanco, John Orsen, Blake Miller, Julian Watts and Joe Mascaretti on the Lizards roster.
The New Jersey Pride and the Long Island Lizards will meet twice during the 2008 MLL season, on June 28 in New Jersey and on July 3 on Long Island.
