JMU COMES BACK TO DEFEAT HOFSTRA, 6-4

McKinnon Langston went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored as James Madison overcame a 4-1 deficit to defeat Hofstra, 6-4, on Friday afternoon in game one of a Colonial Athletic Association series. Matt Prokopowicz, Jeff Guthridge, Tom Legregni and Tom Caltabiano had one RBI each for the Pride. With the victory James Madison improves to 17-7 (10-3 CAA) while the Pride drop to 8-17 (0-10 CAA).

 

With the score tied at 4-4 in the seventh inning the Dukes mounted a two-out rally to score the deciding run of the contest. Brett Garner singled to centerfield to get things going, then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Langston delivered with a Garner on second, driving a double off the right field wall to give the Dukes its first lead of the game, 5-4. James Madison scored an insurance run in the eighth to increase the lead to 6-4 when Brett Sellers singled home Mike Fabiashci, who had led off the inning with a single.

 

Hofstra got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with two runs. Dave Cole led off with a single to right field and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mark Stuckless. Prokopowicz took advantage of the scoring opportunity, driving a single to right field to score Cole. Prokopowicz proceeded to steal second, then was driven home by Guthridge one out later to give the Pride a 2-0 lead.

 

James Madison pushed across a run in the fourth when David Herbek bunted home McKinnon from third to cut the Hofstra lead to 2-1. The Pride would respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Guthridge worked a walk to lead things off, then stole second base and advanced to third on a single by Nick Panzarella. Legregni drove Guthridge home on a fielder's choice groundout and advanced to third when Dion Pouncil doubled to centerfield. Caltabiano drove home Legregni to put the Pride ahead, 4-1.

 

However, the Dukes stormed back, scoring one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. Alex Foltz scored in the fifth on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-2. Then in the sixth, Langston came around to score on a groundout after reaching on an error and David Herbek scored on a bunt single by Foltz that tied the score.

 

Kyle Hoffman picked up the victory for the Dukes, pitching eight innings and allowing four runs while striking out eight. Kevin Munson pitched the ninth to record his first save of the season. Bobby Neelon started for the Pride, allowing just two earned runs and striking out five in the losing effort.

 

Hofstra returns to action Saturday, March 29 for game two against the Dukes. Start time is set for 2 p.m.
