HERR SHUTS OUT HOFSTRA, 6-0

3/23/2008 12:00:00 PM

Towson starter Duane Herr got all the run support he needed when the Tigers scored an unearned run in the second inning as he shut out Hofstra, 6-0. The victory concluded a three-game conference sweep of the Pride, who drop to 6-15 (0-9 CAA). Towson improves to 8-12 (3-6 CAA).

Towson took advantage of two Hofstra miscues to score a run in the first and take a one run lead, 1-0. Nick Natoli, leading off the inning, reached first on an error and then advanced to third base after a walk and a throwing error. Matt Collins drove home Natoli with a groundout to second. Hofstra starter Nick Panzarella managed to work through the inning without allowing another run, but Towson had all they would need.

Terry Gallo and the Tigers pulled away when he slugged a two-run home run in the third, driving in Gary Helmick who had reached base on a fielder's choice. The home run, Gallo's third of the year, extended the lead to 3-0.

Collins drove in Jason Stifler with a double to left center and Austin Harclerode singled home Collins one out later for two runs in the sixth. In the eighth inning, Harclerode drove in Collins again to conclude the scoring.

Matt Prokopowicz reached base three times. Batting lead-off for the first time this season, Prokopowicz singled up the middle to start the game, was hit by a pitch and walked only to be stranded all three times.

Herr allowed only four hits, walking two and hitting two batters while striking out five in the complete game effort. Panzarella took the loss for Hofstra, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.

Hofstra returns to action in a non-conference double header at Siena on Tuesday. Game one is set to start 1:30 p.m.
