PRIDE FALL IN CAA OPENER

12/30/2008 10:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY -- Natty Fripp (Oakland, CA) fell one point shy of her first career double-double and Jess Fuller (Queens, NY) compiled her fifth double-double of the season, but Northeastern eliminated a 13-point second half deficit as the Pride dropped a 57-52 decision to the Huskies in its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener Sunday afternoon at the Mack Sports Complex.

Fripp recorded a career-high 12 rebounds and added nine points. But Northeastern's Jasmine Crew hit two free throws with 31 seconds left to put the visitors up by one point and completing the comeback. The Huskies hit all six of its free throws in the final minute, snapping the Pride's seven-game winning streak.

Hofstra fell to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Senior guard Niki Williams (Pittsburgh, PA) tied her career-high with nine assists, though Crew scored 12 points and Kendra Walton and Brittany Wilson each added 11 for Northeastern, which improved to 4-8 and 1-0.

The Pride held Northeastern to just 31 percent shooting from the field and held a 45-30 edge in rebounding. Dani Iervolino gave the Huskies its first lead of the game, hitting a three-pointer from the right wing with 2:19 left on the clock to put Hofstra behind, 51-49.

Williams responded by hitting a runner in the lane on the next possession with the shot clock expiring, marking the last of her three points. Following a Hofstra defensive stop, Joelle Connelly (Arcade, NY) responded by drawing a foul inside and hitting one of two free throws. The freshman forward scored eight of her 14 points in the second half.

Crew responded by also drawing a foul inside, hitting both free throws to clinch the win. Hofstra lost its first game since November 28, though Fuller did her best to extend a winning streak that would have tied the second-longest in the school's Division I history.

The junior center finished 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Hofstra's eight wins already marks the second largest turnaround in the NCAA. Last year, the Pride won five games.

Hofstra established a 27-12 rebounding advantage in the first half, holding the Huskies to just 31.3 percent field goal shooting. Yet Northeastern entered halftime trailing by just 28-24 by generating 13 turnovers.

The Pride started strong from beyond the arc to help take the lead. Freshman guard Nicole Capurso (Staten Island, NY) provided a hot shooting touch off the bench, converting back-to-back three-pointers in putting Hofstra up, 17-9, at the 12:46 mark.

Hofstra also established an inside presence. Fripp hauled in 10 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. That total already marked a personal best for the senior guard, whose previous career-high was nine rebounds. In the paint, Fuller and Connelly combined for 11 points.

Fuller blocked four shots and also scored in the paint. She took Williams' bullet pass and put in a lay-up despite Watson fouling her on the arm, putting the Pride up 20-14. Junior guard Sam Brigham (Simsbury, CT) drilled a three-pointer in front of the Huskies bench nearly two minutes later, opening a nine-point lead nearly 13:30 into the contest.

Northeastern went on a 7-0 run before Connelly answered with a jumper. The schools traded baskets until the buzzer, making it a four-point game at intermission.

Hofstra will hit the road for its next game, taking on Delaware Thursday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
