HOFSTRA FALLS ON ROAD TO NORTHEASTERN

10/8/2008 3:00:00 PM

Freshman midfielder Mike Kennedy scored with 24:52 left in the game to break a scoreless tie as the Northeastern Men's Soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Hofstra on Wednesday afternoon at Parsons Field.

With the win, Northeastern improves to 4-2-4 overall and 2-0-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Hofstra falls to 1-7-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the CAA with the loss.

Northeastern broke a 0-0 tie at the 65:08 mark, as Kennedy converted off some quick passing. Ryan Burnham started the play when he fed Lewis Ehrlich through into the left edge of the box. Ehrlich played a low cross to the far side, where Kennedy crashed in and slotted a shot from 12 yards out inside the left post.

Hofstra had one dangerous chance to tie the game on a free kick from 20 yards in the 75th minute. However, senior midfielder Justin Flood (Hauppauge, NY) hit a bending shot just over the crossbar.

Josh Semerene tacked on an insurance goal for the Huskies with 1:50 left in the game on a 3-on-1 breakaway after the Pride pushed everyone forward looking for the tying goal.

The first half saw limited opportunities for both teams, although Hofstra sophomore Kevin Mira (Daly City, CA - pictured) came off the bench and had a pair of chances late in the half. He got to a bouncing ball just outside the top of the penalty area in the 38th minute and cranked a dipping shot that was tipped over the crossbar by Northeastern goalkeeper Scott Partridge. Off the ensuing corner kick, Mira got to another ball at the top of the box and struck a low shot towards the left side of the net, but Partridge was able to stop it with a diving save.

Sophomore forward Johannes Grahn (Tibro, Sweden) also had a good chance in the first 15 minutes, as he one-touched a flick shot from outside the box over the head of Partridge towards an empty net, but it sailed over the crossbar.

Northeastern finished the game with a 10-8 edge in shots, including 5-1 in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Haddam, CT) had fives saves for Hofstra in a losing effort, while Partridge had three saves for the Huskies to get the shutout.

Hofstra returns to action on Saturday when it hosts a home game against Delaware at 7 p.m.
