Freshman goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Haddam, CT/Haddam-Killingworth - pictured) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Soccer Co-Rookie of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office.
Cumpstone helped the Pride to a 1-1 split last week, making 11 saves in two games and allowing only one goal on a penalty kick. He had seven saves in a 1-0 shutout win over George Mason on Wednesday, and then had four saves in a 1-0 loss to William & Mary on Saturday.
Several of his saves were of the spectacular variety, including a lunging save while lying down on a rebound shot against George Mason in the second half to keep the game scoreless. All four of his saves against William & Mary came on open shots from inside the penalty area, including a diving stop in the first half.
Cumpstone took over as the full-time starter for the Pride on Oct. 4 at Virginia Commonwealth. He has helped Hofstra to a 3-1-1 record in its last five games, allowing only three goals in that span, including the penaly kick against William & Mary.
With his strong performance last week, his goals against average has dropped to 1.34 on the year, while he has tallied all three of the Pride's shutouts this season, including one against preseason CAA favorite Old Dominion on Oct. 18.
Cumpstone played four seasons of soccer at Haddam-Killingworth High School, where he helped the Cougars to the first two conference championships in school history as a junior and senior, when it finished with a combined final record of 33-8-1 over those two seasons. He led his team to the Connecticut state quarterfinals as a senior, earning all-state honors.
Cumpstone shared the CAA Rookie of the Week award with fellow goalkeeper John Steele of Towson, who had a combined 16 saves in two games for the Tigers last week. The two goalies will face each other when Towson visits Hofstra on Wednesday for the Pride's regular season home finale at 7 p.m.
