Junior forward Pemba Ramdoo (Diego Martin, Trinidad) gave Hofstra an early lead after scoring on a penalty shot against La Salle (pictured at right) and the Pride went on to post a 2-0 win over the Explorers and win the Hofstra Invitational championship. The win for the Pride raises their record to 3-1, while the Explorers drop to 1-2.
Ramdoo got Hofstra on the board 4:55 into the game as she converted the penalty stroke for a 1-0 lead. Kristin Thompson (Santa Cruz, Trinidad) converted a pass from Kara McEneaney (Miller Place, NY) to give the Pride a 2-0 advantage at the 32:25 mark.
That would be all Hofstra would need as the Pride's defense held the Explorers to just four shots, two of which were on goal. Jessica Cowperthwait (Wilmington, DE) made two saves in posting the shutout, while La Salle's Ellen Axelsen had eight saves.
In the second game of the day, Villanova defeated Quinnipiac, 5-2. Megan Foster had a productive day for the Wildcats, scoring the first goal of the game at 16:17, tallying another goal at 46:18, and assisting on Courtney Linde's score with 12:39 left in the match. With the win, Villanova improves its record to 3-1, while Quinnipiac drops to 1-2.
Hofstra was 2-0 in the tournament, whileVillanova and Quinnipiac tied for second with 1-1 records. The Pride will be on the road for the next two contests, meeting up with the University of Maine on Friday, September 8 at 3 p.m. and Boston College on Sunday, September 10 at 1 p.m. When the Pride return home, they will face the Orange from Syracuse University on Sunday, September 17 at 1 p.m.
