Hofstra senior Kara McEneaney (Miller Place, NY) had a goal and an assist to lead the 18th-ranked Pride to a 3-1 win over Syracuse Sunday afternoon. The Pride's win improves their record to 5-2 on the season, while the Orange drop to 3-3.
Late in an evenly-matched first half, McEneaney set up senior Leslie DeSimone (Roseland, N.J./Mount Olive) following a penalty corner as Hofstra took a 1-0 lead at 32:37. Early in the second half, the Pride extended their lead to 2-0 as junior forward Pemba Ramdoo (Diego Martin, Trinidad/South East Port of Spain Secondary) scored after receiving a pass from senior midfielder Doni-Melissa Jantzen (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) at 42:28. Syracuse answered seven minutes later with Alison Babbitt scoring off a pass from Gloria Nantulya to cut the Hofstra advantage in half, 2-1. McEneaney, though, connected on an insurance goal at the 56:55 mark to secure the victory.
Hofstra outshot Syracuse, 10-4, and a held an 8-2 edge in penalty corners. Syracuse goalkeeper Marie O'Brien saved two shots in 58:00 in goal, while Heather Hess finished up in goal for the Orange with two saves. Senior Jessica Cowperthwait (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Friends School) played all 70 minutes for the Pride and made three saves.
The #18-ranked Pride travels to Quinnipiac on Wednesday, September 20 for a 3 p.m. contest. This will be the first match between the two teams since October 2004, when Hofstra came out on top 5-0.
