UNTERSTEIN LEADS #4 PRIDE PAST #12 TOWSON IN OVERTIME

3/31/2006 9:30:00 PM

Senior attackman Chris Unterstein scored with 38 seconds remaining in the first overtime to lift the fourth-ranked Hofstra Pride past 12th-ranked Towson, 10-9, in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at James M. Shuart Stadium Friday night. The win, Hofstra's seventh straight, improves the Pride's record to 7-1 on the season and 1-0 in the CAA. Towson falls to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Unterstein finished the evening with four goals, while senior goalie Matt Southard (pictured) made 10 saves in the Hofstra cage, including a point blank stop on Matt Hagelin with 2:15 remaining in overtime that led to the Pride's game-winning possession.

The Pride opened the scoring 3:33 into the contest as freshman Tom Dooley took a pass from junior Zachary Heyl six yards away from the goal and fired a bullet over the shoulder of Tiger goalie Mark DeGroat. It was the newcomers' 13th goal of the year.

But the Tigers came back with five unanswered goals, including four in the first quarter to take a 5-1 lead. Junior Bobby Griebe scored his ninth goal of the year, on the man-up, from six yards out after a pass from Adam Hagelin at the 8:04 mark to tie the game. Towson's leading scorer Phil Grillo gave the Tigers the lead 1:47 later, taking a pass from Hagelin that came across the Hofstra goal for the easy dunk. Sophomore Kyle Batton tallied his sixth goal of the year with 2:29 to play in the quarter, going around the left side of Hofstra goalie Matt Southard and beating him for a 3-1 lead. Senior Todd McMullen tallied his fifth goal of the season, from five yards out, taking a pass from Griebe behind the cage and beating Southard with 17 seconds to play in the period for a 4-1 lead. Grillo scored his second of the game and 16th of the season 1:30 into the second quarter off a pass from Keith Obloj for a 5-1 advantage.

But Hofstra rallied with four unanswered goals starting off with senior Chris Unterstein scoring an unassisted goal, his 12th of the season, at the 1:41 mark. Three minutes later, junior Athan Iannucci took a pass from senior John Keysor and fired a bullet from 17 yards out that beat DeGroat for his 20th goal of the year to close the deficit to 5-3. Almost two minutes later, senior Tim Treubig fed Ryan Lucas for a man-up goal to close the gap to one. It was Lucas'  third goal of the season. Sophomore Mike Unterstein tied the game at 5-5 for the Pride, coming around the cage for an unassisted goal with 3:51 to play in the half.  Grillo scored his third of the game, off a pass from Hagelin, from eight yards out on a turn-around bullet with 3:26 to play in the half.  But Chris Unterstein tallied the second of his four goals on the night with 1:27 to play in the half, taking a pass from John Keysor in front, to tie the game at 6-6.

Keysor gave the Pride a 7-6 lead 1:50 into the third quarter, taking a pass from freshman Mike Colleluori for his 10th goal of the year. But Oliver Bacon tied the game at 7-7 for Towson with an unassisted goal, his ninth of the year, almost two minutes later. Once again, Hofstra came  up with the big goal as Athan Iannucci scored a man-up goal off a pass from Tom Dooley as the penalty expired for an 8-7 lead after three quarters.

The Tigers tied the game 8:03 into the fourth quarter as Kyle Fiat caught the Pride defense napping and took a pass from Brian Vetter and went in alone on Southard for his fourth goal of the year. The Pride took a 9-8 lead with 3:44 to play as Chris Unterstein came across the crease and beat DeGroat for his third of the game and 14th of the season. But Bobby Griebe tied the game for Towson with his second of the game and 10th of the year, off a pass from Bacon, from seven yards out with 1:49 to play in regulation.

In the overtime, Southard made a point blank stop of Hagelin after a scramble for a loose ball in front of the cage with 2:15 to play. The Pride got the ball back and freshman Tom Dooley whistled a shot high of the goal from the right side with 1:32 remaining in the overtime. On the game-winning goal, John Keysor started the play by feeding Chris Unterstein behind the goal. After an aborted attempt to come around the cage seconds before, Unterstein came around the right side, ran by the Tiger defense and beat DeGroat (13 saves) with a shot to the far side of the cage.

Towson outshot the Pride 39-37 and picked up 30 ground balls to Hofstra's 23. The Pride victory snapped a five-game losing skid to the Tigers. Hofstra's seven-game winning streak is the program's longest since a nine-game run in 2002. Hofstra will host Sacred Heart this Wednesday, April 5 at Shuart Stadium at 7:30 p.m. while the Tigers will return to action on Wednesday at UMBC at 7:30 p.m.
