PRIDE DRAW OLD DOMINION IN CAA SEMIFINALS

10/31/2006 7:00:00 PM

The second-seeded Hofstra Men's Soccer team will renew its rivalry with Old Dominion in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Virginia Beach.

Third-seeded Old Dominion advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 overtime win over sixth-seeded UNC Wilmington on Tuesday evening, setting up a rematch of the last two CAA championship games, both won 1-0 by Hofstra. A year ago, the Pride captured its second straight CAA title with a 1-0 win at Old Dominion on a goal with only eight seconds left in regulation from junior midfielder Adrian Papaluca (Winston Hills, Australia - pictured).

In 2004, Hofstra earned its first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament berth with a 1-0 win over Old Dominion at Virginia Commonwealth, completing a Cinderella run to the title as the fifth seed in the six-team field. Senior forward Michael Todd (Cleveland, England) scored a late first half goal on a breakaway, and the Pride defense held the rest of the way.

Old Dominion, though, had the better of the regular season match-ups between the schools, winning the first four meetings after Hofstra moved to the CAA in 2002, until the Pride finally broke through with a 2-1 win this year at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Todd had both goals in that contest, including the game-winner with less than 10 minutes to play.

Top-seeded Towson will meet fourth-seeded George Mason in the other Friday semifinal, after George Mason advanced with a 1-0 win over Northeastern on Tuesday. The two semifinal winners will play on Sunday for the CAA championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
