PRIDE WRAPS UP SECOND SEED WITH 2-0 WIN OVER NORTHEASTERN

11/4/2005 7:00:00 PM

Senior goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht (Hemhofen, Germany - pictured) picked up his fifth straight shutout and Michael Todd (Cleveland, England) and Chris Cox (Nottingham, England) added first half goals as the Hofstra Men's Soccer team captured a 2-0 win over Northeastern in its regular season finale on Friday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

With the win, the Pride improves to 12-4-3 overall and 7-2-2 in the CAA, and secures the second seed in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association tournament, earning a bye in the opening round. Hofstra will move on to Friday's semifinals at top-seeded Old Dominion, where it will play the winner of Tuesday's game between the third and sixth seeds. Those teams will be determined after Saturday's play.

Gumbrecht's five straight shutouts are a career-best streak, eclipsing the four in a row that he had at the end of last season, including all three games in the CAA Tournament. The five straight shutouts are also the longest for a Hofstra Men's Soccer team since the 1969 team closed out the year with seven shutouts in a row.

Hofstra got all the offense it would need in the third minute of the game, when junior midfielder Constantinos Christoudias (Nicosia, Cyprus) was taken down in the box for a penalty kick. Cox took the penalty kick and slotted the ball past Northeastern goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio for his fifth goal of the year.

The Pride added an insurance goal at the 28:02 mark of the first half, when Todd took a short pass from junior Brian Sosa near midfield. Todd then went on a 30-yard run up the middle of the field, splitting the seam between three Northeastern defenders, and slotted a shot from outside the box that tucked into the side netting inside the right post for his team-high 11th goal of the season. The 11 goals are the most for a Hofstra player since Stuart Duffin also had 11 in the 1999 season.

Northeastern had two good scoring chances in the second half. Tom Heimreid (Oslo, Norway) had a header on a corner kick in the 57th minute that was saved off the line by junior midfielder Arnel Andrada (Staten Island, NY). Jay Betley (Longmeadow, NY) also took a shot on an indirect kick from 12 yards in the final minute of the game that was saved by a sprawling Gumbrecht to preserve the shutout.

Hofstra closes out the 2005 regular season with an unbeaten record at home (6-0-2). The Hofstra Women's Soccer team was also undefeated at home (7-0-1) giving the two programs a combined 13-0-3 record at Hofstra Soccer Stadium this fall.

The game also served as Senior Day for the Pride's five seniors, including Gumbrecht. Senior defenders Billy Chung (Succasunna, NJ), Jason Gates (Fort Collins, CO) and Alex Kornprobst (Erlangen, Germany) and midfielder Matthew Telling (Rotherham, England) were also honored before the game.
