Hofstra University is one of only four schools in the country to win both men's and women's soccer conference championships and NCAA automatic bids this fall.
Hofstra joins UCLA (Pac-10), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Horizon) and Creighton (Missouri Valley) as the only four schools in the country to win soccer championships in both genders. Yale also won the Ivy League women's title and shared the men's title with both Dartmouth and Brown, but Dartmouth won the tiebreaker and earned the Ivy's automatic bid (the Ivy League does not have a postseason tournament).
The Hofstra Women's Soccer team began the double-championship run when it defeated Virginia Commonwealth 1-0 in the CAA championship game on Nov. 4 at VCU. Freshman midfielder Edel Malone (Ennis, Ireland) scored the game-winning goal in the 10th minute and the Hofstra defense protected the one-goal lead in the second half. The Pride finished second during the regular season and defeated Delaware 2-1 in the first semifinal to set up the championship game with VCU. Hofstra made its first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in the final yearfor Head Coach JoAnne Russell, who announced her retirement prior to the conclusion of the regular season.
The Hofstra Men's Soccer team then added another championship to the Hofstra trophy case when it defeated Old Dominion 1-0 at Old Dominion on Nov. 11. Sophomore midfielder Adrian Papaluca (Winston Hills, Australia) scored the game-winning goal with only eight seconds remaining in regulation, to give the Pride back-to-back CAA Championships. Hofstra finished second during the regular season and defeated James Madison 3-2 in overtime in the semifinal round to set up the championship game rematch with Old Dominion, which the Pride also defeated 1-0 in last year's CAA Championship. This year's victory enabled the Pride to host an NCAA Tournament home game on Friday at 7 p.m. against Providence, its first ever NCAA home game.
Both the Hofstra Men's and Women's Soccer teams have identical 14-4-3 records, heading into the men's NCAA Tournament game on Friday. Hofstra is also one of only four schools in the nation to have at least 14 wins in both its men's and women's soccer programs, joining North Carolina, Connecticut and UNC Greensboro.
The winner of the Hofstra-Providence NCAA Men's Soccer game on Friday will advance to the second round and face North Carolina on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in Chapel Hill.
