Hofstra bats cranked out 30 hits as the Pride swept the Quinnipiac University Bobcats in a doubleheader, 16-4 and 10-7, Saturday afternoon at University Field. Freshman pitcher Charlie Frago (2-1) pitched a complete game in the opener, while David Huth (1-2) scatterd nine hits ove six innings in game two. Hofstra improves to 4-8 on the season, while Quinnipiac falls to 1-7 overall.
The first game was a 1-1 affair until the fourth inning when Hofstra broke it wide open, scoring 15 runs over the next three frames. In the fourth inning, the Pride loaded the bases without a hit as J.P. Wechter was hit by a pitch, George Athanasopoulos walked, and Andrew Campana reached on a catcher's interference. Josh Stern reached first on an error by the second baseman, scoring Wechter, Athanasopoulos, and Campana for a 4-1 lead. Hofstra would extend its lead to 16-1, scoring six runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Josh Stewart was hit by a pitch and Ricky Caputo singled. Mike Perullo then doubled, knocking Stewart and Caputo home. Stewart, who went 4-for-6 on the day with three runs scored and four RBIs, singled later in the inning scoring Campana and Athanasopoulos. In the sixth inning, Athanasopoulos doubled, bringing home Mike Walsh, who also doubled, and J.P. Wechter, who reached on a fielder's choice. Josh Stern also doubled in the inning, bringing home Athanasopoulos. Stern went 5-for-9 with three runs scored on the day.
Quinnipiac put three runs on the board in the seventh, but it was not enough as Frago (2-1) pitched his first career complete game.
In game two Hofstra took a 5-2 lead into the fifth inning, and tallied four more runs to make it 9-2. Walsh and Steve Oliveri both singled, and Walsh scored on an error by the right fielder. Campana reached on catcher's interference and Stewart singled, scoring Oliveri. Athanasopoulos then singled, bringing home Stewart and Campana. Athanasopoulos went 4-for-6 with four runs and four RBIs.
Quinnipiac scored two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to make the score respectable.
Huth pitched six innings, giving up six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Dave Bennett took the loss for the Bobcats.
Hofstra Baseball returns to action tomorrow, March 14, when it travels to Quinnipiac for a 1 p.m. contest.
