9/7/2003 12:00:00 AM

ONEONTA, NY (Sept. 7) ?“  Greg Victor scored the game's only goal at the 12:38 mark of the first half to lead the Hartwick Men's Soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at the Mayor's Cup at Oneonta State University.

With the win, Hartwick improves its record to 3-0 on the season while capturing the Mayor's Cup Championship. Hofstra, meanwhile, sees its record slip to 1-2.

Victor's goal came early in the contest when he converted on an unassisted tally with his left foot on a blast which ricocheted in off the right post past Hofstra goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht (Hemhofen, Germany). Hofstra tried to push forwatd to get the equalizer, but was unable to get the ball past Hartwick goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar, who had five saves.

The Pride defense came to the aid of Gumbrecht three times. Freshman back Gary Flood (Hauppaugue, NY) was credited with a defender save in the first half to keep the score 1-0 heading into intermission. Senior back Rishi Matadeen (South Yorkshire, England) then added a pair of defensive saves in the second half four minutes apart. The Pride had a couple of solid chances to net the equalizer, particularly from junior forward Michael Todd (Cleveland, England), who had five shots on the day. However, Hartwick held on for the one-goal margin of victory.

Gumbrecht had six saves for Hofstra, which was outshot 23-14 for the day and was on the short end of a 6-2 spread in corner kicks.

Hofstra will next be in action when it entertains Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 13 for a 2 p.m. contest. That will be part of a doubleheader with the women's team, which faces Central Connecticut at 4 p.m.
