Oneonta, NY (Sept. 6) - Sophomore midfielder Michael Hermann (Erlangen, Germany - pictured) scored 11:38 into the second half to break a 1-1 tie and give the Hofstra Men's Soccer team a 2-1 win over Oneonta State on Saturday afternoon at the Mayor's Cup in Oneonta, NY.
The win improves Hofstra's record to 1-1 on the young season, following its opening game loss at home to Villanova 2-1 on Monday. Oneonta, meanwhile, slips to 2-1 after starting out the season with a pair of victories.
The Red Dragons took a 1-0 lead in just the second minute of the game, when Jme Amaoko scored an unassisted goal from the right side at the 1:52 mark. The Pride knotted the score midway through the first half on the first career goal from freshman back Gary Flood (Hauppauge, NY), who converted on a header off a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Pablo Lara (Edison, NJ) with 17:37 left in the opening stanza.
Hofstra then broke the deadlock early in the second half, as Hermann scored on a header off a cross from sophomore midfielder Jason Gates (Fort Collins, CO) at the 56:38 mark.
The Pride defense buckled down the rest of the way and held on for the 2-1 victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht (Hemhofen, Germany) had five saves to get the win in goal, while Jack Potter did not have a save for Oneonta, which held an 11-6 edge in shot attempts.
Hofstra will next be in action when it faces Hartwick College on Sunday at 12 noon on the second day of the Mayor's Cup.
