Hofstra's Alex Maina (Thika, Kenya) has been named the CAA Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, while the Pride's Jen Malenovsky (Patchogue, NY) has been tabbed as the CAA Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Maina placed third at the 2003 Collegiate Track Conference Championship in Center Valley, Pa., on Saturday afternoon to lead the Hofstra men's squad to the team title. The junior ran the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:45.49, just a half-second behind second-place finisher Andrew Williams of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. De Sales' Mike Vidumsky took in the individual title running a time of 26:06.99.
The Pride placed two runners in the top 10 to claim first place with 67 points, ahead of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (70), De Sales (81), Misericordia College (89) and Rowan (104). Maina's time was his second-fastest 8,000-meter run of the season, 12 seconds faster than his season-best at the George Mason Invitational on Oct. 4.
Malenovsky placed second at the Collegiate Track Conference Championship in leading the Hofstra women to the team title. Malenovsky ran the fastest 5,000-meter time on the Hofstra roster this season posting a time of 18:39.02. The freshman's time was 42 seconds better than the previous Hofstra season-best run, which was set by Jen Campbell at the Delaware Invitational I on Sept. 20.
The Pride finished with 35 points to top the eight-team field and claim their third team championship of the season. Sacred Heart took second place with 54 points, followed by De Sales in third with 75 points.
