#4 ODU HANGS ON FOR 1-0 WIN OVER HOFSTRA

10/18/2003 12:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY (Oct. 18) - Kevin McMenamin scored the game's only goal in the 26th minute and the No. 4-ranked Old Dominion Men's Soccer team withstood some relentless pressure from Hofstra in the second half to hold on for the 1-0 win on Saturday evening in front of 941 fans at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

With the win, Old Dominion improves to 12-0 on the season, including 4-0 in CAA play. It was the Monarchs' 10th shutout of the season in 12 games. Hofstra, meanwhile, sees its record slip to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The only goal was set up following an Old Dominion corner kick. The ball bounced loose in the box, where a Hofstra defender attempted to clear it away. The ball came out to McMenamin outside the box, who settled it, and then half-volleyed a shot that rifled into the upper-left corner from 18 yards, past the dive of Hofstra goalkeeper Matthias Gumbrecht (Hemhofen, Germany).

The second half, though, saw Hofstra come up with numerous quality scoring chances, the best of which came with just under 15 minutes to go off its own corner kick. Michael Hermann (Erlangen, Germany) took the corner, and senior back Rishi Matadeen (South Yorkshire, England) got a head on it from 15 yards out to send it towards goal. Sophomore forward Michael Todd (Cleveland, England) had position inside the six-yard box, and chipped a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced straight down, but never crossed the goal line.

Moments later, freshman midfielder Paulo Walters (Niantic, CT) rifled a 25-yard shot that was dipping under the crossbar, but Old Dominion goalkeeper Sam Cameron dove to tip it over the crossbar to keep the score 1-0. With just over a minute to play, Hofstra had a direct kick just over midfield and Hermann sent a ball into the center of the box that was flicked on by senior midfielder Arni Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland). However, the ball missed going inside the far post by less than a foot.

Hofstra held a 16-10 advantage in shot attempts for the game, as well as a 10-8 edge in corner kicks, including 8-4 in the second half. Cameron had five saves to get the shutout for the Monarchs, while Gumbrecht also had five saves for the Pride, which saw its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

Hofstra returns to action next weekend when it hosts a pair of conference games against defending CAA champion VCU on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and against North Carolina-Wilmington on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Old Dominion game was part of an all-day event to celebrate the grand opening of the Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Hofstra women's team defeated William & Mary 1-0 in the first part of the doubleheader, while a ribbon cutting ceremony was held between games to officially open the new stadium. Earlier in the day, a charity tournament was held by Barclays Capital, featuring teams from Barclays (U.S. and U.K.), the New York Police Department and the New York Fire Department. The FDNY team won the title with a 2-1 win over the Barlcays U.K. team in the final. Over 100,000 was raised to support the Sergio Villanueva Memorial Scholarship Fund at Hofstra University.
