ALBANY CAPTURES 2-1 WIN OVER HOFSTRA

Hempstead, NY (Oct. 28) - Ashtian Holmes and Jarvin Skeete scored goals 1:40 apart in the closing minutes of the first half as the Albany Men's Soccer team came from behind for a 2-1 win over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at University Field.

Hofstra (8-7-1, 5-4) got on the board first with 18:53 left in the first half when senior forward Patrick Geraghty took a direct kick from just outside the upper left corner of the penalty area and beat Albany goalkeeper Trevor Serraro to the near post for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Albany (7-8, 4-5), though, took advantage of the second yellow card on Hofstra back Brian Dunleavy with 4:25 left in the first half. Just 10 seconds later, Holmes got to a loose ball in the penalty area and slipped a shot from 10 yards inside the right post off assists from Jason Warshaw and Ryan Bombard to even the score 1-1.

Just 1:40 later, Lorenzo Henry played a long ball out the back that Skeete ran onto down the left sideline. Hofstra goalkeeper Justin Varrone came off his line, but Skeete was able to dribble around him and slip the ball into the vacated net with 2:35 left in the first half, giving the Great Danes a 2-1 lead.

Hofstra's closest chance to tie came in the final minute of regulation, when junior midfielder Shaun Higgins one-timed a shot from 25 yards that Serraro dove to the near post to deflect away for his fifth save the game. Varrone had four saves for Hofstra.

The Pride, which is now in a close battle for an America East Conference playoff spot, close out their regular season when they travel to face Maine and New Hampshire next weekend on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
