Hempstead, NY - In what is becoming nearly an annual ritual, the Hofstra men's basketball program earned top honors from the Coastal Athletic Association today as graduate student guard
Tyler Thomas became the latest member of the Pride to be named the CAA Player of the Year.
Thomas earned All-CAA First Team accolades as well and joining him as honorees from the Pride were
Darlinstone Dubar (All-CAA Second Team) and
Jaquan Carlos (CAA All-Defensive Team).
Remarkably, Thomas receiving the CAA's top honor marks the third consecutive season the program has had the conference's player of the year. In addition, Hofstra will have had the CAA's Player of the Year in six of the last nine seasons with Thomas joining
Aaron Estrada (2023 and 2022), Justin Wright-Foreman (2019 and 2018), and Juan'ya Green (2016). Other winners from Hofstra since the program joined the CAA include Charles Jenkins (2011 and 2010) and Loren Stokes (2007).
The last CAA school to earn three consecutive CAA Player of the Year Awards was George Mason in 1999 (George Evans), 2000 (George Evans), and 2001 (George Evans).
Thomas, a second team All-CAA honoree in 2023, is having a tremendous 2023-24 campaign as he is averaging 22.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.2 steals per outing. He leads the CAA and ranks third nationally in scoring, while leading both the conference and all of NCAA Division I in three-pointers made per game with 3.7. Thomas reached double figures 30 times this season and tallied 20 or more points 21 times this year. One of the best scorers in the nation, Thomas has 2,269 career points to rank fourth among active players in career points. That total includes his 1,268 points at Hofstra and his 1,001 at Sacred Heart. His Hofstra point total ranks 23rd in program history.
It has been an incredible breakout season for Dubar as he increased his scoring average by nearly eight points per game and his rebounding average by nearly two per contest. Dubar ranks second on the Pride and fifth in the conference with 18.1 points per outing. He is also averaging 6.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game. His rebounding total is tops on Hofstra and 11th in the league and his 71 three-pointers this season is second on the team he ranks seventh in the CAA with 2.29 three-pointers made per game. Dubar has scored in double figures 30 times and had 11 games this season of at least 20 points. Dubar's 1,294 points at Hofstra rank 21st in program history. This is the first postseason All-CAA honor of Dubar's career.
One of the top defenders in the CAA, Carlos is third in the league in steals per game with 1.6. Carlos' influence on the game can be felt all over the court, though, as he is averaging 10.1 points, 6.4 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game. He is first in the CAA and 12th nationally in assists per game and his assist per game total is more than two assists per game higher than the next highest player in the league. Carlos has 388 career assists to rank eighth in program history. Carlos is a repeat member of the CAA All-Defensive Team.
Voting for the postseason CAA awards is done by the league's head coaches.
Hofstra opens play in the CAA Championship on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals. The Pride will face the winner of the Delaware/Elon or Hampton game.
