Hempstead, NY - Hofstra guard
Tyler Thomas was named the Coastal Athletic Association Player of the Week today, it was announced by the conference office.
Thomas had one of the most remarkable weeks in recent Hofstra basketball memory in leading the Pride to the title at the Gulf Coast Showcase.
Thomas averaged a spectacular 30.3 points per game over the three games, while shooting 50% (30-60) from the field overall, 45% from three-point range (13-29), and a perfect 18-18 from the free throw line. He played every second of the final two games of the tournament after playing 30 minutes in the tournament-opening rout of Buffalo.Â
The championship game against High Point put him further into Hofstra lore as he poured in 40 points and added eight rebounds and five assists in the overtime win. It marked the 19th 40-point game in program history and the 40-point game was the first at the NCAA Division I level this season. He scored an insane 33 points in the second half alone.Â
The inseason tournament title is the program's first since winning the Boca Raton Beach Classic in 2019-20.
Thomas, who was named the tournament MVP, finished with 91 total points, setting a new Gulf Coast Showcase scoring record. The previous record was set one year ago when Kansas City's RayQuawndis Mitchell had 82 points in the tournament.
Thomas got the tournament started with 21 points, five assists, and three rebounds in the win over Buffalo on Monday. He followed that up with his first 30-point out of the season with 30 points, four rebounds, and four assists in the semifinal victory over Wright State.Â
Thomas had back-to-back 30-point games, his first games of at least 30 points in his Pride career (career-high of 36 points at Sacred Heart).Â
Thomas is now averaging 25.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game this season. He is shooting 45.5% from the field, 43.5% from three, and 95.5% from the field throw line. Thomas has started all six games and is averaging 35.7 minutes per game.Â
Hofstra is 4-2 heading into its Thursday night home game against South Florida.Â
