Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra women's lacrosse team will open the 2022 season on Saturday when it hits the road to take on local rival Long Island. 

Opening draw control is scheduled for 2 p.m. 

The Pride enters the year coming off an exciting 2021 campaign that saw Hofstra earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament, its third appearance in program history. Hofstra won six games a season ago, including three against nationally-ranked opponents.

The Pride returns its second-leading scorer from a season ago as graduate student Katie Whelan is back for another season in the blue and gold after totaling 39 points on 20 goals and a team-best 19 assists in 2021. On the defensive end, graduate student Shannon Boyle anchors the group and is coming off a season in which she led the team with 22 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. 

Long Island went 9-5 in 2021 and saw its season come to an end in the semifinals of the Northeast Conference Championship.

This is the first-ever meeting between Hofstra and Long Island in women's lacrosse.
