Hempstead, NY - Alum
Michael Altmann of the Hofstra men's lacrosse team added one last accolade to his college career as he was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® At-Large Third Team, in an announcement by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Friday afternoon.
With today's announcement, Altmann makes history by becoming the first student-athlete in Hofstra men's lacrosse history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors. Additionally, Altmann becomes the 34th student-athlete in Hofstra athletics history to be named an Academic All-American by the organization, and he joins Tareq Coburn (men's basketball), Kristin Hallam (softball), Lucy Porter (women's soccer), Storm Strongin (men's soccer) and Matthew Vowinkel (men's soccer) as the sixth Hofstra student-athlete to receive Academic All-America distinction in the 2020-21 academic year.
In the classroom, Altmann compiled a 3.81 cumulative grade point average as a graduate student majoring in marketing following the completion of his undergraduate degree in management with a 3.57 grade point average. He was named to multiple CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Rolls and Hofstra Athletic Director Scholar Academic Honor Rolls as a student-athlete, and was one of four Hofstra men's lacrosse playes to be named a 2021 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-American.
Since his first season in a Hofstra uniform in 2017, the Maryland native appeared in 60 games with 15 starts as a close defenseman/long-stick midfielder and totaled 118 ground balls and 48 caused turnovers. Altmann also tallied 19 points with eight goals and 11 assists, proving that he was just as dangerous on both ends of the field. Altmann wrapped up his Hofstra career in 2021 with an All-CAA First Team selection as he led the team and finished fourth in the conference in caused turnovers with 16 while scooping up 36 ground balls, and he posted a career-high eight points on three goals and five assists. In May, following the conclusion of the 2021 season, Altmann was selected to represent the Pride in the USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game.
In addition to his work on the lacrosse field and in the classroom, Altmann's work within the Hofstra community was particularly noteworthy. Altmann spent countless hours volunteering with many campus organizations and events, including the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K to honor the firefighters and first responders who lost their lives on September 11th, and teaching lacrosse to special needs students through Hofstra University's Campus Connection. This past March, he was one of 20 men's lacrosse student-athletes across the country to be named a candidate for the 2021 Senior CLASS® Award for his achievements in academics, athletics, and community service.
