MLAX: Hofstra Squares Off with #9 Drexel for Chance to Lift CAA Championship Trophy

Hempstead, NY - With a conference title and an automatic qualifying bid to the 2021 NCAA Tournament on the line, the Hofstra men's lacrosse team will square off against #9 Drexel in the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Championship Final on Saturday, May 8, from James M. Shuart Stadium.

The opening face-off for Saturday's contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. Lax Sports Network will broadcast a live video stream, while WRHU will provide the audio broadcast, and live statistics will be available. As the four-seed in the CAA Championship, Hofstra advanced to the championship game with a thrilling 10-9 win over top-seed and No. 12 Delaware on Thursday (May 6). Senior Dylan McIntosh set a new season-high with five goals, including four in the first half, while the Pride defense and redshirt senior goalie Bobby Casey held the vaunted Delaware offense to just nine goals.

Despite being held without a point on Thursday, senior Ryan Tierney continues to be a point of focus for any defense. The newly crowned CAA Offensive Player of the Year, Tierney ranks eighth in the country in goals per game (3.15) and 16th in the country in points per game (4.69). In addition to the red-hot Mcintosh, who has scored nine goals in his last two games, graduate student Justin Lynskey has also been a threat to score and distribute on the starting attack line with 24 goals and 17 assists for 44 points. In the midfield, the trio of seniors James Philbin and Riley Forte, and sophomore Justin Sykes have combined for 44 goals and 17 assists. Graduate student Michael Altmann has been a terror as the Pride's top long-stick midfielder, leading the team with 14 caused turnovers and scooping up 35 ground balls in addition to three goals and five assists. Senior Brian Herber continues to control the face-off circle for Hofstra, as he possesses a face-off win percentage of .639 and a team-leading 105 ground balls. In net, Casey enters Saturday on the heels of four straight games with 10 or more saves, and his season totals stand at 95 saves, a .487 save percentage and a goals against average of 11.03.

Ranked ninth in the country and the two-seed in the CAA Championship, Drexel advanced to the title game after posting a 13-8 win over three-seed Massachusetts. With the top scoring offense in the conference, the Dragons are led by Sean Donnelly with 42 points on 25 goals and 17 assists, while Aidan Coll leads the team with 29 goals to go with his 11 assists for 40 points. All-CAA First Team defenseman Sean Quinn leads the team with 18 caused turnovers, while Jimmeh Koita has been the top face-off man for Drexel with 121 wins in 235 draws (.515 win percentage) and 66 ground balls. Ross Blumenthal has been the top netminder for the Dragons this season with 107 saves, a save percentage of .484, and a 10.79 GAA.

The teams last met on April 24 on Vidas Field in Philadelphia, with the Dragons winning by score of 12-9 over the visiting Pride. Hofstra holds a 24-9 all-time record against Drexel entering Saturday's fixture, but the Dragons have been the victors of three straight over the Pride.
