Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men's Lacrosse team will kick off their 2019 Colonial Athletic Association schedule this Saturday, March 30 when the Pride travel south to Maryland to face the 10
th-ranked Tigers of Towson at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Game time is 12 p.m.
The game will be streamed live and free of charge on the Lax Sports Network with Travis Eldridge and Steve Panarelli describing the action. Hofstra has wins over Lehigh (4-3), Utah (14-10), and St. John's (9-7), and losses to nationally-ranked Villanova (10-9 in OT), Georgetown (14-6), and Ohio State (14-8) as well as Stony Brook (11-10), Providence (11-10) and Rutgers (10-7) in Piscataway, New Jersey last Saturday.
In the Rutgers contest, the two teams battled and split the first eight goals through the first 21 minutes of the contest. It was at that point that the Scarlet Knights went on a five-goal goal and the Pride went scoreless for almost 34 minutes as Rutgers opened up a 9-4 lead with a little under nine minutes to play in the contest. The Pride tallied three of the last four goals in the contest, including two by junior
Ryan Tierney to complete his fifth hat-trick of the season. But it wasn't enough for the Pride, who fell to 3-6 on the season.
In addition to Tierney's three goals, Hofstra received one goal and two assists from senior
Jimmy Yanes and two goals from junior
Ryan Kinnard. Sophomore goalie
Bobby Casey made eight saves in the Pride goal.
On the season, Hofstra is led in scoring by Tierney with 22 goals and six assists while Yanes has five goals and a team-high seven assists. Kinnard now has 10 goals and one assist while sophomore
Riley Forte has added six goals and three assists. Freshman
Whit Stopak, who has not played in the last three contests due to injury, has eight goals in six games. Sophomore goalie
Bobby Casey has a 9.97 goals against average with 94 saves and a .511 save percentage.
The Tigers of Towson, who are ranked 10
th in the USILA Coaches Poll, 11
th in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and 12
th in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll this week, are 5-3 on the season and on a three-game losing skid. The Tigers have wins over nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins (17-8), Georgetown (14-8) and Loyola (12-10) as well as Mount St. Mary's (12-7) and Jacksonville (15-13). Towson losses have come against nationally-ranked Cornell (18-11), Duke (12-10) and Denver (7-6). The Tigers average 12.12 goals per game and allow 10.38 per contest.
Towson is led by senior Brendan Sunday with 22 goals and six assists while junior Brody McLean has added 18 goals and four assists. Senior Timmy Monahan has chipped in with 11 goals and eight assists while sophomore Luke Fromert has posted 12 goals and six assists. Senior Alex Woodall ranks second in the country in face-off percentage, winning 148 of 196 face-offs for a .755 winning percentage. Junior Tyler Canto has recorded a 10.27 goals against average and has made 94 saves for a .550 save percentage.
Hofstra and Towson will be meeting for the 50
th time on Saturday in a series that began in 1961. The Pride hold a 27-22 series lead. The two programs last met on March 31, 2018 in Hempstead with the Pride recording a 9-3 victory over the Tigers. Hofstra and Towson last met in Maryland on April 29, 2017 with the Tigers winning 10-8.
After the Towson game, Hofstra returns home to James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday, April 6 for a CAA game against Massachusetts on Alumni Day.
