Hofstra is coming off one of its best performances of the season as the defeated Princeton, 87-72, on Thursday on the road. Senior
Eli Pemberton posted a game-high 27 points, while fellow senior
Desure Buie added 13 points, seven assists, and a career-high seven rebounds. Juniors
Tareq Coburn (14),
Jalen Ray (14) and
Stafford Trueheart (11) all reached double figures as well. It was an especially strong outing for Trueheart (also six rebounds), who had totaled 11 points for the Pride all season through 11 games and doubled that total against the Tigers.Â
Pemberton is the Pride's leading scorer in a very balanced offensive attack for Hofstra. He is averaging 16.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while Buie is second with 16.4 points and ranks first with 5.9 assists and 2.5 steals. Ray is averaging 13.3 points and has drained a team-best 23 three-pointers, while Coburn ranks fourth on the team with 11.8 points and is tops on the squad with 7.2 rebounds per outing.Â
Manhattan is 4-4 this season and most recently dropped a narrow one-point decision, 59-58, to Western Michigan, on December 14, at home. The Jaspers are led in scoring by Samir Stewart, who is averaging 9.7 points per game, while Tykei Greene is second with 9.3 per outing. Greene also leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game, while Nehemiah Mack has 2.6 assists per game to pace Manhattan.Â
Hofstra is 23-42 all-time against Manhattan. The Pride won last season's meeting, 80-50, in Riverdale as Coburn posted 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Buie added 18 points and Ray chipped in with 13. The first-ever meeting between the schools was during the 1937-38 season, Hofstra's second-ever season of men's basketball. The Pride won that first encounter, 40-35. The 65 all-time meetings between Hofstra and Manhattan ranks as the fourth most common opponent for the Pride (Delaware – 91, Drexel – 89 and Towson – 69) and the most common current non-conference opponent in program history.
