New Haven, CT – In a contest marked by several lightning delays, Hofstra senior
Madison Sauve scored the only goal in the seventh round of the sudden death shootout to give the Pride a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Pioneers of Sacred Heart at Yale University's Johnson Field Tuesday afternoon.
Hofstra boosted its record to 2-7 on the season and snapped a seven-game losing skid. Sacred Heart slips to 6-4 on the season. The Pride outshot the Pioneers, 28-17 and had seven penalty corners to Sacred Heart's five.
The Pioneers opened the scoring at the 7:07 mark as Makenna Crawford took a pass from Marlena Koellner in front of the goal and beat Hofstra goalie
Betty Bosma (6 saves) for the 1-0 lead. It was Crawford's second goal of the season.
After several lightning delays that caused the 35-minute, first half to be more than two hours long, Hofstra tied the game in the 47
th minute as red-shirt sophomore
Madison Georgiana scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career off an assist from freshman
Cami Larsson.
Following two scoreless overtime periods, the two teams went to the shootout period. After no goals through the first six rounds, Sauve scored for the Pride while the Pioneers missed their attempt to give Hofstra the win. (Goals and saves in the shootout are not credited to individuals)
The Pride return to action on Friday, September 21 when Hofstra entertains Rider at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 3 p.m.
