Hempstead, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher Sarah Cornell of the Hofstra Softball team has earned the Colonial Athletic Association's first Pitcher of the Week honor of the season.
 
Cornell had a strong Opening Weekend in the circle for Hofstra, going 2-1 with a pair of shutout victories in the FIU Felsberg Invitational in Miami. In a 4-0 win over East Carolina on Saturday, Cornell threw a career-high 14 strikeouts in her first victory of the season. She followed it up with 11 strikeouts in a 2-0 eight-inning pitchers' duel with FIU on Sunday, allowing just two hits from the Panthers.
 
She finished the weekend with 31 strikeouts (good for fourth in the country) and a 1.33 ERA, holding opposing batters to a .116 average. Cornell was named Pitcher of the Week twice last season and Rookie of the Week once.
 
The Pride kicks off five straight days of action on Friday, taking on Kennesaw State and Stetson at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando at 12 and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
