Hofstra Blanks Towson to Claim Series-Opening Win

Towson, MD – The Hofstra softball team resumed its Coastal Athletic Association schedule with a bang, hanging 14 runs on Towson in a 14-0 win in six innings over the host Tigers from Towson Softball Field.
 
Hofstra improves to 19-15 overall and 12-1 in the CAA with its seventh consecutive conference win, while Towson falls to 19-15 and 4-6 in league play.
 
After Alanna Morse ended up on third base with two outs, Chelsea Villar drove her home with a single to the outfield for the day's opening run in the top of the first inning, and Hofstra added four more runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Nicole Cancel, a two-run single by Lily Yepez, and an RBI single from Morse. The Pride plated another two runs in the top of the fifth through an RBI groundout and a run scored on one of Towson's three errors to make it 7-0 before blowing the game open with a seven-run sixth inning to put the score at 14-0.
 
Emma Falen pitched another gem from the circle, allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out six Towson batters. After walking two batters in the opening inning, Falen retired the next 12 consecutive batters until a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth. Villar went 4-4 at the plate with a walk and two RBIs, while Morse went 3-5 with two RBIs, Cancel had a 2-2 day with three runs batted in, and Yepez drove in four RBIs on one hit.
 
The Pride and the Tigers resume the series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
NOTES:
-The all-time record between Hofstra and Towson is now 84-28 in favor of the Pride.
-Yepez is the fourth Hofstra softball player to record 4 RBIs in a game this season.
-Hofstra has recorded a shutout in five of its last six CAA contests.
-Of Hofstra's 97 runs scored against CAA opponents, 28 have come in the first inning.
