Towson, MD – The Hofstra softball team capped off a five-game road swing in style with a 5-0 win over Towson to complete its series sweep of the Tigers. Hofstra has now won four of its five CAA series by sweep, and the Pride stands at 21-15 overall and 14-1 in the league. Towson ends the week 19-17 overall and 4-8 against conference opponents.
The bases loaded quickly for the Pride in the opening inning, with
Alanna Morse and
Gabby Sultan drawing walks and
Dahlia Palacio recording a single. The Pride took advantage of a wild pitch with the bases loaded, as Morse slid home safely for a 1-0 lead. Palacio opened the third inning with a lead-off double, and she beat the throw home from centerfield on a grounder by Sultan to up Hofstra's lead to two.
Much like she did in Friday's series opener,
Emma Falen completely locked down Towson, allowing only three baserunners through four innings while registering three strikeouts. Towson threatened with two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Falen and the Hofstra defense got out of the jam with consecutive outs to end the inning. After Sultan and
Chelsea Villar reached base in the top of the seventh,
Ryleigh Smith put an exclamation point on the Pride's weekend in Maryland with a three-run home run well over the left field wall. Falen capped off the win with two strikeouts in the seventh inning.
Palacio and
Mackenzie Fitzgerald both finished with two hits in the win, while Smith, Sultan, and
Gemma D'Orazio all tallied one hit. Falen finished the game with eight strikeouts against one walk and two hits allowed.
Hofstra faces St. John's in Queens on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before hosting Campbell in a three-game series beginning on April 10.
