BB: Hofstra Falls To James Madison In Series Opener

Hempstead, NY - David Leiderman went 3-for-5 with his seventh home run of the season and Steven Foster and Ryan Karl added two hits each, but Hofstra dropped the opening game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series to James Madison, 15-4, Friday afternoon at University Field

Zach Tondi drove in four runs for the Dukes with two doubles and a home run, while five other JMU players each drove in a pair of runs.

Hofstra took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Foster led off with a double and came in to score on Vito Friscia's single. After a stolen base and a fly out sent Friscia to third, Leiderman cranked a double to left centerfield to give the Pride a two-run lead.

But the Dukes sent nine men to the plate in the third, scoring five runs. The inning started innocently enough as Hofstra starter Teddy Cillis retired the first two batters. But two singles and a walk loaded the bases and Bret Johnson drew a bases loaded walk to force in the first run. A two run single from Kyle Mcpherson gave the Dukes the lead and Tondi followed with a two-run double to make it a 5-2 game.

Hofstra (15-35, 5-16 CAA) got a run back in the fourth on Foster's RBI single that scored Kevin O'Connor, but the Dukes pulled away with three runs in the fifth. Johnson had an RBI single and Kyle Weston added a two-run single.

The Dukes would score three times in the seventh and four more times in the ninth to take a 15-3 lead. Leiderman would hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to close the scoring.

Aaron Hoover (6-4) allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings and Matt Marsilli threw the final three innings to earn his first save.

Cillis (3-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.  Chris Bonk threw a scoreless eighth inning for the Pride, retiring the Dukes in order.

Ky Parrott, Johnson, Mcpherson, Weston and Bradley McCay each had two RBIs for the Dukes.

The teams will conclude the series Friday with a Noon doubleheader. Senior day festivities will start at 11:30 a.m.

Notes:
