BB: UNCW Rallies Past Hofstra In Series Opener

Wilmington, NC - UNCW rallied from a 4-1 deficit, scoring twice in the fifth and three time in the sixth to post a 6-5 victory over visiting Hofstra in the opening game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Brooks Field.

The league-leading Seahawks improved to 29-10 on the season and 9-2 in CAA play. The Pride slipped to 13-28 overall and 4-11 in league action.

After UNCW took a 1-0 lead in the second, scoring a run on a passed ball, the Pride rallied for four runs in the fifth. The Pride put runners on the corners before Tom Archer drove in the first run with a sacrifice bunt. Mat Annunziata added an RBI single and Brad Witkowski delivered a two-run double.

But UNCW scored two runs in the fifth, one on a Brian Mims double and the other on an infield single from Gavin Stupienski, to pull within 4-3. The Seahawks would take the lead in the sixth, scoring three times with two outs. Kennard McDowell tied the game with an RBI single and Robbie Thorburn scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.  Steven Linkous drove in the third run of the inning with a double that plated McDowell.

Hofstra had one last rally in the eighth, putting runners on second and third with one out. Ryan Karl had a sacrifice fly but the Pride could not come up with a hit to score the tying run.

Alec Eisenberg (1-6) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings of relief. He did record six strikeouts. Teddy Cillis, who began his career at UNCW, started for the Pride and allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts in four innings of work.

Ryan Foster (9-1) allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits in six innings to get the win. He had seven strikeouts. Taylor Hyssong pitched the final three innings and allowed a run on one hit with six strikeouts to earn his first save.

Witkowski and Vito Friscia each had a pair of hits for the Pride. Thorburn had three hits and two runs for UNCW.

The series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.

NOTES:
-Cillis' four innings are a career best
-Witkowski's two-hit game was his team-high 15th of the season
-Hofstra was held without a home run for the first time in five games
