BB: Hofstra Falls In Series Finale At Elon

Elon, NC - Nick Bottari was 1-3 with a home run, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs, but Elon used a three-run third and a four-run fourth to pull away from Hofstra in a 10-5 victory Sunday afternoon at Latham Park. The win completed a three-game sweep for the Phoenix.

Hofstra fell to 13-27 overall and 4-10 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Elon upped its mark to 19-22 overall and 10-7 in league play.

After the Phoenix went up 2-0 in the first, the Pride chipped away with a run in the second on Ryan Karl's RBI ground out and them another run in the third as Mat Annunziata scored on an error to tie the score. But Ryne Ogren homered and CJ Young added a two-run double in the third to push the lead to 5-2.

Bottari would hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to cut the Pride's deficit to two, but Elon would respond with four runs in their turn at bat. Ogren had an RBI double, Nick Zammarelli added a sacrifice fly and Danny Lynch and Young contributed RBI singles to give the home team a 9-3 lead.

Elon would score a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly before Hofstra closed out the scoring in the eighth with a Bottari sac fly and a bases loaded walk from Kevin O'Connor.

Mason Daniels (3-3) earned the win for the Phoenix, allowing five runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. Robbie Welhalf pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, coming on with the bases loaded in the eighth, to earn his first save.

Bowie Matteson (3-4) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing nine runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Dave Jesch pitched 2 1/3 scoreless frames for the Pride and fanned five.

Hofstra returns home to face St. John's on Tuesday at 3 p.m., before returning to North Carolina next weekend for a three-game series at UNCW.
