BB: Hofstra Falls To Elon In CAA Doubleheader

Elon, NC - Mat Annunziata hit two home runs in game one and the Pride had six home runs on the day but it was not enough as Elon posted a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Latham Park.

Hofstra fell to 13-26 overall and 4-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the losses. Elon improved to 18-22, 9-7 in league play.

Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in game one on Annunziata's first home run, but the Phoenix scored six runs in the bottom of the inning highlighted by Liam O'Regan's grand slam. After Ryan Karl homered for the Pride in the second to cut the deficit to 6-2, Nick Zammarelli responded for Elon with a two-run shot that pushed the lead to 8-2. Elon grew the lead to 12-3 in the third as Zammarelli added a two-run double.

The Pride made it a 12-6 game in the seventh as Steven Foster had a RBI single and Annunziata hit a two-run home run. After Elon added two runs in the eight, the Pride closed the scoring with a solo home run from Teddy Cillis and another RBI single from Foster.

Chris Weiss (1-4) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings. Michael Elefante (2-1) got the win after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings.

In the nightcap, Tyler McVicar's two-run triple in the seventh extended the Phoenix lead to 5-3 and Kyle Jackson added a two-run homer in the eighth. Brad Witkowski and Cillis each hit solo home runs in the game for the Pride.

Jordan Barrett (2-3) picked up the win, allowing six hits and two runs in six innings. John Rooney (2-5) took the loss after allowing three runs and four hits in six innings.

The teams will conclude the series Sunday at Noon.
