BB: Hofstra Rallies To Defeat LIU Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY - Teddy Cillis hit a grand slam home run and Hofstra scored 12 unanswered runs to erase a 5-0 deficit in a 12-6 victory Wednesday at LIU Field. The win extended Hofstra's winning streak to five games.

Hofstra improved to 13-24 on the season while the Blackbirds dropped to 10-22.

LIU Brooklyn scored a run in the first on a double play and the added four runs in the second to build a 5-0 lead.

But the Pride chipped away with three runs in the third. Steven Foster led off with a walk and scored on Mat Annunziata's double. Brad Witkowski followed with a double of his own to drive in the second run. After moving to third on a fly out, Witkowski scored on an LIU error. The Pride tied the score in the fifth on a two-run home run off the bat of Ryan Karl.

Hofstra loaded the bases to start the sixth inning and went up, 6-5, as Vito Friscia drew a bases loaded walk. Two batters later, Cillis connected on his team-leading seventh home run and first grand slam to extend the lead to 10-5. Kevin O'Connor and Brad Witkowski closed out the Pride's scoring with RBI singles in the seventh.

The Blackbirds got an RBI double from Anthony Capo in the eighth to account for their final run.

Dave Jesch (1-2) earned the win in relief, allowing one hit in two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. The win was the 10th of his career.

William Jackson (1-2) took the loss for LIU Brooklyn, allowing four runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Hofstra returns to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. when it begins a three-game series at CAA-rival Elon.  

Notes:
-Witkowski (3), Cillis (2) and Annunziata (2) combined for seven of Hofstra's 11 hits
-Hofstra's two home runs marked the 10th game with multiple home runs this season
-Andrew Mundy struck out the side in the ninth inning
-Steven Foster extended his hitting streak to 11 games
