BB: Hofstra Completes Series Sweep Of Charleston With 8-7 Win

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra used a five-run seventh inning to take an 8-3 lead and then held off a ninth inning rally by Charleston to post an 8-7 win and complete a three-game series sweep of the Cougars at University Field Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra improved to 12-24 overall and 4-7 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the win. The Cougars slipped to 21-14-1 overall and 5-4 in league play.

Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as Jones was hit by a pitch and went to second on an infield single from Morgan Phillips. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up and Alex Pastorius followed with a run-scoring ground out.

But Hofstra responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs with a two-out rally. Brad Witkowski and Vito Friscia drew walks, and David Leiderman followed with a triple to give the Pride a 2-1 lead. Nick Bottari took the first pitch he saw into left field to put Hofstra up by a 3-1 score.

The Cougars tied the score in the sixth on a two-run triple from Pastorius. Following a hit batter and a sacrifice bunt that put runners on second and third, the Pride replaced starter Bowie Matteson with Teddy Cillis, who got out of the inning without further damage.

The score stayed tied until the seventh when the Pride struck for five runs on five hits. Tom Archer got things started with a one-out infield single. Steven Foster followed with a single through the left side, while Mat Annunziata delivered a base hit through the right side to load the bases. Witkowski then came through with a two-run single to right that gave the Pride a 5-3 lead. Leiderman then doubled to right center to drive in two more runs for a 7-3 advantage and prompt a pitching change. Leiderman would steal third on the first pitch from Will Detwiler and after a walk to Ryan Karl, Hofstra would execute a delayed double steal. With Karl caught in a rundown between first and second, Leiderman scampered home with the eighth run before Karl could be tagged out.

The run proved crucial as Charleston's Bradley Jones hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth to make it a one-run game. But Hofstra pitcher Andrew Mundy recovered and got the next two batters to ground out and earn his first save.

Leiderman was 2-3 with four RBIs on the day, while Witkowski was 2-3 with a pair of RBIs. Chris Hardardt also added a pair of hits in the game.

Cillis (2-0) got the win after allowing three runs on one hit in 2 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two. Mundy, who gave up the grand slam, got his first career save with 2/3 of an inning of work.

Justin Baker (1-2) took the loss in relief after allowing five runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Hofstra is back in action Wednesday at LIU Brooklyn. Game time is 3 p.m.
