BB: Rooney, Karl Propel Hofstra To Series Win

Hempstead, NY - Freshman pitcher John Rooney threw a complete game four-hitter and Ryan Karl knocked in all three runs as Hofstra earned a series win over College of Charleston with a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon at University Field.

Hofstra, which won for the third consecutive game, moves to 11-24 on the season and 3-7 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Charleston suffered its third loss in a row and falls to 21-13-1 overall and 5-3 in league action.

The Cougars struck first, in the second inning, as Jake Maziar tripled and came in on a sacrifice fly from Alex Pastorius. But the Pride answered in the fourth with a pair of runs. Vito Friscia walked and went to third on a double from David Leiderman. After a walk to Teddy Cillis loaded the bases, Karl launched a shot to right field that hit the top of the fence and bounce back into play. Two runs scored on the hit, but the Cougars were able to escape without further damage.

The Pride added a run in the sixth as Friscia led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Karl delivered his second double of the game to plate Friscia.

That was all Rooney needed as the freshman, who was making his fourth career start, allowed just one hit after the third inning. He walked just one batter and struck out a season-high eight to improve to 2-4 on the season.

Bailey Ober (3-2) took the loss for Charleston, allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.

Leiderman, who hit the game-winning home run in the series opener, finished the day 2-2 with a sacrifice, a run scored and a hit by pitch. Kevin O'Connor was 3-3 batting in the ninth spot in the order.

Bradley Dixon had two of the Cougars four hits.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at Noon with the Pride looking for a sweep. Bowie Matteson will start for Hofstra and will be opposed by Eric Bauer.
