BB: Hofstra Drops Opening Game At Towson

Towson, MD - Mat Annunziata went 3-3 with his fourth home run and two RBIs and Ryan Karl added a solo home run of his own but it was not enough as Towson posted a 15-4 win in the opening game of a Colonial Athletic Association series Friday at Schuerholz Park.

A.J. Gallo went 3-5 for the Tigers with a double, a triple and five RBIs while Chris Henze and Trey Martinez each homered.

Hofstra falls to 6-20 on the season, 0-3 in league play. Towson moves to 10-16 on the year and 1-0 in CAA action.

Hofstra took a 2-1 lead in the third as Karl hit his third home run of the season, a two-run blast that scored Kevin O'Connor. Towson would use a five-run third to take control of the game and never looked back. Martinez started the rally by reaching on an error. A walk and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. Hofstra opted to load the bases with an intentional walk. The Tigers scored the tying run as Martinez came in on a wild pitch. After a walk to Henze, Gallo cleared the bases with a triple to make it a 5-2 game. Gallo would come in to score on a bunt single from Collin Dyer.

The Tigers would add five more runs in the fifth on a pair of two-run home runs from Henze and Martinez, and a Richard Miller RBI single to go up by a score of 11-2.

Annunziata's two-run homer in the sixth made it 11-4, but The Tigers got a run in the sixth and three more in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Skyler Morris (1-1) picked up the win for Towson, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. Garrett Walther allowed two hits over the final 3 1/3 innings to notch his first save.

Chris Weiss (1-2) took the loss, allowing 11 runs (9 earned) on nine hits in five innings.

The teams play game two of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
