BB: Matteson, Bottari Lift Hofstra Past Towson

Towson, MD - Bowie Matteson allowed two runs on five hits over 7 2/3 innings and Nick Bottari went 2-3 with a three-run home run as Hofstra picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season with a 7-3 victory over Towson Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

Hofstra moved to 7-20 overall and 1-3 in league play. Towson slipped to 10-17 on the year and 1-1 in the CAA.

The Pride built a 3-0 lead after four innings, scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Vito Friscia reached on an error to lead off the second and stole second. A walk and a single loaded the bases and Hofstra took advantage of another Towson error as Kevin O'Connor reached on a miscue to knock in Friscia with the first run.

A Towson error resulted in the Pride's second run as Steven Foster led off the third with a ground rule double and came in to score when Mat Annunziata's grounder was misplayed. The Tigers defense had nothing to do with the Pride's third run as Teddy Cillis homered in the third, his fifth of the season. Hofstra would add three key insurance runs in the sixth as Bottari's fifth home run of the season brought home Brad Witkowski and Friscia, who each singled earlier in the inning.

The Tigers got a pair of runs in the sixth on a two-run home run from Richie Palacios. That was the only runs Matteson would allow as the senior evened his record at 2-2.

Hofstra would tack on another unearned run in the ninth on a RBI single from Witkowski.

Towson scored a run off of Cillis in the ninth on an RBI ground out from A.J. Gallo, but the red-shirt sophomore struck out Colin Dyer to end the game.

Austin Clark (0-3) took the loss for Towson, allowing three runs (1 earned) on four hits in five innings of work.Palacios, Colin Gimblet and Brady Policelli each had two hits for the Tigers.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
