BB: Hofstra Extends Winning Streak To Four In Victory Over Army West Point

West Point, N.Y. – Sophomore outfielder Mat Annunziata drove in six runs to help Hofstra erase a three-run deficit as the Pride slugged its way to a 14-8 victory over Army West Point on Wednesday afternoon from Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.

Annunziata hit a three-run home run in the second and contributed to the team's five-run rally in the sixth to help the Pride extend its winning streak to four. Hofstra improved to 4-7 overall while Army West Point lost its home opener to fall to 3-8.

Red-shirt freshman Nick Bottari hit a three-run home run to ignite a five-run ninth innings rally for the insurance runs. Senior Ryan Karl scored three runs for the Pride. Hofstra has scored 63 runs in the last four games.

Freshman John Rooney threw three scoreless innings in relief to earn his first career victory in improving to 1-0. The left-hander struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Army put three runs up in the first inning, loading the bases with one out against Pride freshman starter Andrew Mundy. Trey Martin drew a walk to force in the first run and Josh White reached on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. Keegan Vega drove in the third run with an infield single before Mundy escaped further damage by inducing an infield pop up.

The Pride stormed right back in tying the score as Karl and freshman Vito Friscia drew back-to-back walks to start the second inning. Annunziata followed with his second home run of the season, hitting a three-run shot off Army West Point starter Daniel Burggraaf for his season's second home run.

Hofstra took the lead for good in the fifth when junior David Leiderman drew a walk to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt and a ground out moved Leiderman to third. Army West Point brought in left reliever Cam Opp and Friscia greeted him by lining a single up the middle to plate the go-ahead run. The base hit marked Friscia's first career RBI. The run was charged to Patrick Gardner (0-1).

Hofstra scored five runs in the sixth, starting when Bottari drew a leadoff walk and sophomore Teddy Cillis followed with a triple to make it a 5-3 game. Freshman Tom Archer followed with an RBI single and junior Brad Witkowski delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Archer with Hofstra's seventh run. Annunziata would continue his strong day at the plate with a two-run single to make it 9-3.

The Pride gave a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but escaped a bases loaded jam with one out. Army West Point threatened for more in the seventh in starting the inning with a single and a walk. A lineout ended senior Chris Bonk's relief outing, though the Knights loaded the bases on a walk and scored a run on a wild pitch. Trey Martin's RBI single made it 9-6 and brought the potential tying run to the plate. A walk re-loaded the bases before senior Brendan Mulligan struck out the next two batters to minimize the damage.

Hofstra scored five runs in the ninth and sophomore Cillis came in from right field and was the last of six Hofstra pitchers to see action when he recorded three outs in the final inning.

Hofstra will continue its season opening 14-game road trip with a three-game weekend set at Longwood starting with Saturday's doubleheader that commences at noon in Farmville, Virginia.
