BB: Hofstra Drops A Pair Of Games At Longwood

Farmville, VA - Longwood's Colton Konvicka delivered a solo home run in the bottom of the 12th to lift the Lancers in the nightcap and Longwood scored two unearned runs in game one as the Pride dropped a pair of heartbreakers Saturday at Bolding Stadium. Game scores were 2-0 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap.

Hofstra fell to 4-9 with the losses and saw its four-game win streak end. Longwood snapped a two-game losing skid and is now 9-6 on the season.

Alec Eisenberg and Travis Burnette engaged in a pitcher's duel in game one as neither team could get on the board through the first 6 ½ innings. But in the bottom of the seventh, the Lancers broke through. Drew Kitson drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Connar Bastaich. A passed ball moved both runners up and Konvicka walked to load the bases. Pinch-hitter James Barry then reached on an infield error that allowed Kitson and Bastaich to score. Eisenberg was able to escape further damage, but the Hofstra offense could not solve Longwood's pitching. Burnette (2-1) allowed six hits in 7 2/3 innings before yielding to Sean Pico for the final 1 1/3. Pico allowed one hit in notching his first save of the season.

The Pride did put two men on in the eighth and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth but could not come through with a hit to bring a run across. Eisenberg (1-3) was a hard-luck loser after allowing two unearned runs on four hits in seven innings. He struck out four batters and walked four as well. Mat Annunziata and Nick Bottari each had a pair of hits for the Pride.

Hofstra held a 1-0 lead in the nightcap, before the Lancers struck for three runs in the sixth on just one hit. Reliever Dave Jesch retired the first two batters, but two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Bastaich cleared them with a double to put Longwood on top, 3-1.

The Pride got a run back in the seventh as Teddy Cillis came in on a throwing error on Steven Foster's double and then tied the score in the ninth with David Leiderman delivering a game-tying single.

Adam Heidenfelder (0-2), who took the loss, pitched well in relief. The sophomore allowed the one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Foster had three hits in the game, while Leiderman and Chris Hardardt had two hits apiece.

Michael Catlin (2-0) picked up the win for Longwood, allowing two hits in three scoreless innings.

Hofstra starter Chris Weiss pitched 4 2/3 innings of one-hit ball before exiting. Jesch pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on one hit.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at 11 a.m. The game time was pushed up from 1 p.m. due to weather concerns.
