WREST: Hofstra’s Hughes Qualifies for NCAAs; Two Advance to The EIWA Championships Second Day

Princeton, NJ -  Two Hofstra wrestlers, junior Michael Hughes, who qualified for the NCAAs and graduate-student Jamel Hudson, have advanced to Sunday's day two of the 2016 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships at Princeton University's Jadwin Gymnasium.

Hughes, a native of Smithtown, NY and the third-seed at 285 in the EIWA Championships, advanced to Sunday's semifinals with two victories Saturday and thus, qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, hosted by Hofstra University, at Madison Square Garden from March 17-19. The EIWA received six allocations at 285 pounds.

Hughes (36-7) majored American's Jake Scanlan in the first round, 12-1 and then pinned Princeton's Ray O'Donnell at the 0:46 mark of the quarterfinal match. Hughes, who will be making his first appearance in the NCAA Championships in 12 days, will face the second-seed Max Wessell from Lehigh in the semifinals Sunday morning.

Hudson, a native of Bay Shore, NY, will be looking for his second NCAA Championship bid at 141 on Sunday with a win in his first match. Hudson posted a 2-1 record on Saturday with an opening round loss by pin in 6:31 to the fourth-seed Tyler Smith from Bucknell before recording victories over Binghamton's Dylan Carauna, 9-3 and the sixth-seed Logan Everett from Army West Point, 9-4 in wrestlebacks.

Hudson (18-7) will face American's Tyler Scotton on Sunday for the right to wrestle in, at least, the fifth/sixth place match later in the day. The EIWA also received six allocations at 141 pounds.

Two other Hofstra wrestlers posted victories on the day before being eliminated. Sophomore Bryan Damon opened the day with a 9-0 major decision over the eighth-seed Steven Bulzomi at 125. But Damon dropped the next two matches by fall, including one to the top-seed, to finish the season at 18-22. Junior Jahlani Callender also posted a 1-2 record on the day. He dropped his first match to the sixth-seed Ian Brown from Lehigh before topping Navy's Drew Daniels in sudden victory, 3-1. Callender was eliminated with a 3-2 loss to the fourth-seed Markus Scheidel from Columbia to end his season at 14-19.

Six other unseeded Hofstra wrestlers wrapped up their 2015-16 seasons Saturday. Senior Markus Begay (0-15) at 133, sophomore Kyle Krasavage (14-10) at 149, redshirt freshman Bobby Fehr (4-18) at 165, junior Frank Affronti (28-14) at 174, sophomore Cory Damiana (14-21) at 184 and freshman Omar Haddad (8-23) all saw their seasons come to a close with 0-2 marks on Saturday.

Hofstra is in 15th place with 16.5 points after the first day. Cornell is in first place with 91.5 points, Lehigh is second with 82.5 points and Bucknell is in third with 55 points in the 16-team EIWA.
