BB: Monmouth Rallies Past Hofstra For 5-4 Victory

Hempstead, NY - Shaine Hughes' two-out single in the top of the ninth inning drove in Robbie Alessandrine with the go-ahead run as Monmouth posted a come-from-behind victory over Hofstra Wednesday afternoon at University Field. The Hawks trailed 2-1 and 4-2 before scoring three times over the final four innings.

Hofstra, which has lost six consecutive games, fell to 5-16 on the season. Monmouth improved to 8-11 on the year.

After Monmouth took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Hofstra stormed back in its first turn at bat. Ryan Karl led off with a single and two batters later Vito Friscia blasted his first career home run to put the Pride on top, 2-1.

The Hawks would tie the score in the fifth against reliever Chris Bonk. After putting runners on first and second, a wild pitch bounced away from Friscia and Sean Arnott was able to score all the way from second on the play.

Hofstra again would answer Monmouth's run with two of its own as Tom Archer led off the inning with a hit by pitch. A sacrifice bunt moved him to scoring position and Karl came through with a single to put the Pride ahead, 3-2. After an infield single, Friscia came up big again with a run-scoring double that extended the lead to 4-2.

Monmouth would chip away, scoring a run in the sixth on Cary Jacobson's first home run of the season. Then in the seventh, Grant Lamberton hit his first long ball of the year to tie the game up at four.

Following a scoreless eighth, Hofstra's Adam Heidenfelder came on to pitch the ninth. He retired the leadoff batter on one pitch before giving up a double to Alessandrine. Lamberton, who had three hits, flew out for the second out to bring up Hughes. The sophomore took the first offering from Heidenfelder and deposited it into right field. Alessandrine beat the throw home and the Hawks took the lead, 5-4.

Joe Molettiere came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth for Monmouth and needed seven pitches to retire the side in order for the save. Kyle Ajjan, Monmouth's third of four pitchers on the day, picked up the win to even his mar at 1-1.

Heidenfelder (0-3) took the loss for Hofstra. Karl had three hits in the leadoff position and scored two runs. Friscia had two hits, both for extra bases and drove in three runs.

Hofstra starts Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend when it travels to William & Mary for a three-game series that begins Friday at 6 p.m.
