BB: Hofstra Drops CAA Opener At William & Mary

Williamsburg, VA - William & Mary scored nine runs in the third and fourth innings to take control of the game and the Tribe went on to post a 14-6 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra Friday night at Plumeri Park.  

The Tribe improved to 11-11 and 3-1 in the CAA with the win. Hofstra fell to 5-17 and 0-1 in the CAA with the loss.

Hofstra opened the scoring as Steven Foster reached on a one-out single and two batters later came around to score on Mat Annunziata's double. The Tribe came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on doubles from Charles Ameer, Ryan Hall and Charley Gould. The Pride would storm back in the second inning as Teddy Cillis led off with a home run and Brad Witkowski would add an RBI double to give Hofstra a 3-2 advantage.

That would be the Pride's last lead as William & Mary tied the score in the third inning with Kyle Wrighte scoring on wild pitch. The Tribe would score four runs in the fourth, taking advantage of two Hofstra errors, to take a 7-3 lead. The Tribe would blow the game open in the fifth, scoring five runs. Wrighte had a two-run single and Ameer added a three-run home run.

Alec Eisenberg started and took the loss for Hofstra, falling to 1-5 after allowing seven runs (three earned) on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings. Dan Powers (3-1) went six innings for William & Mary and allowed five runs on 10 hits. Michael Toner pitched the final three innings for his first save of the season.

David Leiderman had three hits for the Pride including a double. Cillis was 2-4 with the home run, two runs and an RBI. Annunziata had two doubles and two RBIs, while Nick Bottari also recorded two hits.

Ameer finished 4-6 with four RBIs for William & Mary, while Wrighte was 3-5 with three RBIs. Hunter Smith was 4-5 with a double, a triple and two runs scored.

The teams continue the series Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
