Michael Hughes each advanced to session three of the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Madison Square Garden Thursday night. Both grapplers posted 1-1 records on the day, losing their first matches and bouncing back to win their first round match in the consolations.
Hudson, who is unseeded at 141, opened his competition with a 16-0 tech fall loss to the fourth-seed Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers at the 6:19 mark. But Hudson bounced back in Thursday night's wrestlebacks, recording a 12-3 major decision over Steve Bleise from Northern Illinois.
Hudson, who is now 21-9, will face the third-seed Kevin Jack from North Carolina State in the second round of the consolations in session three Friday. Jack is now 25-5 on the season.
Hughes, who is also unseeded at 285, also opened his competition with a loss in the first round, falling to the eighth-seed Max Wessell from Lehigh, 6-3 in a rematch of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association semifinal match two weeks ago. Wessell won that day, 7-3 and went on to the EIWA title at 285. But Hughes also recovered to post a 7-2 victory over Rider's Mauro Correnti in the first round of the consolations Thursday night.
Hughes, who is now 40-9 on the season, will face Nebraska's Collin Jensen in Friday's second round of the consolations. Jensen is 23-15 on the season.
The Nittany Lions of Penn State lead the team competition with 27.5 points. Defending national champions Ohio State and Oklahoma State are tied for second with 24 points while Nebraska is fourth with 20 points and Iowa, Missouri and Virginia Tech are tied for fifth with 17.5 points. Hofstra is in 54th place with two points.
Session three of the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships begins on Thursday (Mar. 18) at 11 a.m. with the quarterfinals and the second and third round of the wrestlebacks.
