BB: Strong Pitching Performance Lifts Hofstra Past FDU

Teaneck, NJ - Chris Bonk pitched five innings of two-hit, no-run baseball and Hofstra plated a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to post a 4-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Tuesday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Pride, who improved to 5-10 on the season. Fairleigh Dickinson fell to 6-7 with the loss.

Hofstra scored all it would need in the third off of Knights reliever PJ Weeks (0-2). Steven Foster greeted Weeks with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk to Mat Annunziata, Ryan Karl knocked in Foster with a double. Vito Friscia followed with a single that drove in Annunziata.

The Pride would extend the lead in the fourth inning as Kevin O'Connor led off with a double and two batters later would come in as Foster reached on an error. David Leiderman then came through with an RBI single to score Foster and make it a 4-0 game.

The Knights would threaten in the fourth, loading the bases with one out. But Bonk (1-1) struck out one batter and then ended the inning with a groundout to first to escape the jam.

Andrew Mundy threw three innings of one-hit relief for the Pride, allowing an eighth inning run, before Teddy Cillis pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season. Cillis struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Bonk struck out four batters in is five innings. Karl paced the Hofstra offense with two doubles. O'Connor also added a pair of hits, while Steve Foster was on base four times and scored two runs.

Hofstra has a quick turnaround as the Pride will play their home opener tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. versus Fordham.
