Michael Hughes placed third and senior
Jamel Hudson finished fourth to lead eight Hofstra wrestlers at the Edinboro Open at the McComb Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
Hughes recorded a 4-1 mark on the day to place third at 285 pounds. Hughes opened the tournament with three consecutive wins by fall to advance to the semifinals. His pins came at the 2:16, 0:18 and 1:47 mark of his matches. Hughes was topped by Arizona State's Chance Eskram, 5-2 in the semis. Hughes then copped the third-place match over Thomas Haines from Ohio State by medical forfeit. He is now 31-9 on the season and has a team-high 11 wins by fall.
Hudson was a perfect 4-0 on the day at 141 with four major decision victories. He allowed just two points to his opponent in two matches and three and four points in the other two contests. All four of Hudson's victories were over Division I opposition with two wins over Edinboro opponents and one each over Lehigh and Lock Haven. Hudson took a medical forfeit in the third-place match to place fourth. He is now 16-4 on the season and is second on the team with six wins by major decision. Hudson has now won eight of his last nine matches.
Sophomore
Kyle Krasavage had the busiest day of all the Hofstra wrestlers, going out six time and posting a 4-2 mark at 149. After dropping his first match of the day to the top seed, Krasavage reeled off four consecutive wins including a pin, a tech fall and a win by decision to advance to the consolation semifinals. He dropped a 9-4 decision to J.J. Wolfe from Eastern Michigan in the consolation semifinals. Krasavage is now 14-6 on the season.
Freshman
Ryan Burkert posted a 2-2 mark at 149 pounds Saturday. He recorded a win by fall over Sam Matzek from Cleveland State and a 5-2 win over Jensen Lorea from Edinboro before being eliminated by J.J. Wolfe from Eastern Michigan. Burkert is now 8-12 on the season.
Two Hofstra wrestlers, seniors
Alex Mirante at 149 and
Cory Goshkagarian at 157, each went 0-2 on the day. Two other Pride wrestlers, freshman
Jake Kaminsky at 157 and sophomore
Michael Oxley at 197, competed unattached at the Edinboro Open. Kaminsky recorded a 3-2 mark on the day with three Division I victories and two major decisions. He was eliminated in the consolation round of eight. Kaminsky is now 8-6 on the season. Oxley posted a 1-2 mark at 197 with a 16-0 tech fall victory over Gordon Truesdale from Edinboro. He too was eliminated in the consolation round of eight. Oxley is 6-9 on the season.
The Hofstra Wrestling team returns to dual match action on Thursday, February 11 when they travel to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to face the Broncs of Rider University at 7 p.m. The Pride will wrap up their 2016 home schedule on Sunday, February 14 against EIWA-foe Drexel at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Match time is 4 p.m.
