BB: Hofstra Falls In Extra Innings To Missouri

Fort Myers, FL - Missouri scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at two and then plated the winning run in the 10th to complete a four-game sweep of Hofstra Sunday afternoon at City of Palms Park.

Hofstra fell to 0-7 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 7-2.

The game was a pitcher's duel between Hofstra starter Bowie Matteson and Missouri's Michael Plassmeyer. Matteson threw 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball before the Tigers got on the board in the sixth. The senior allowed a two-out hit to Ryan Howard, who stole second and then scored on a single from Jake Ring.

But the Pride got to Plassmeyer in the seventh as Brad Witkowski and Ryan Karl had back-to-back singles to start the inning. That prompted a pitching change to Cole Bartlett, who hit Vito Friscia to load the bases. Matt Annunziata delivered an RBI single to tie the score and two batters later, following a pitching change, Steven Foster had a sacrifice fly that put the Pride ahead, 2-1.

Matteson turned it over to the bullpen after seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Brendan Mulligan escaped trouble in the eighth, allowing a leadoff double before striking out two of the next three batters. Dave Jesch came on for the save in the ninth. He allowed a single to Howard and walked Ring. A sacrifice bunt resulted in an error and loaded the bases. Following a strikeout, Trey Harris lifted a fly ball to center that allowed Howard to come in with the tying run. Jesch escaped further damage to send the game to extra innings.

Hofstra got a leadoff double from Teddy Cillis in the 10th but were unable to score after a fly out and a line drive double play ended the inning. In the Missouri half of the inning pitcher Brian Sharp drew a leadoff walk and was pinch-run for by Johnny Balsamo. Following a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt, Connor Brumfield drove in the winning run with a single to right field.

Jesch (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) in 1 1/3 innings. The Pride had seven hits on the day with Cillis recording his third two-hit game of the season.

Sharp (1-0) picked up the win for the Tigers, allowing two hits in 3 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Pride will be back in action next Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6, in a three game series at Coppin State. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at Noon and a single game Sunday afternoon.
