Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University sophomore center
Rokas Gustys picked up his second award of the week as he was named the Met Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week, it was announced today.
The designations, for games played Feb. 8-14, are unique in that they encompass players from 74 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
A 6-9 sophomore center from Lithuania, Gustys --- who also was named Colonial Athletic Association player of the week --- averaged 21.5 points on 19-of-25 shooting along with a burly 18 rebounds in leading the Pride (18-8) to a pair of CAA victories and sole possession of second place in the conference.
Gustys got his week started with a 25-point, 15-rebound effort in an 86-80 road win at William & Mary. Both totals represented game-highs and the point total tied Gustys' career-high. He was 12-16 from the field in the game and added three blocked shots.
Next he posted a career-high tying 21 rebounds along with 18 points while shooting 7-9 from the field and adding two blocked shots and a steal.
Gustys, who ranks fourth nationally in rebounds (12.3 rpg) and ninth nationally in field goal percentage, has four games of 20 or more rebounds this season, the most in a season since Kenneth Faried had six for Morehead State in 2010-11.
